#SMSS15 Week ONE DAY 3 “Takeaways” – Google Analytics
Not every business owner has an analytical mind and sometimes the slight thought that you should be measuring your numbers regularly is a daunting thought for some but on this session, Michael Stelzner from Social Media Examiner, Andy Crestodina and Kristi Hines have emphasized the importance of tracking your social updates to drive real marketing results.
Google Analytics gives you the facility of creating tracking links that you will be able to check which social sites have more impact for your business and therefore be able to review, improve or ditch. Those tracking links are called UTM (definition “Urchin Traffic Monitor” ) and you can start by creating some this way:

- I’ve downloaded a Chrome Extension and you should too. It’s called EffinAmazing and looks like this:
- As I want this blog post to be tracked, I am going to create an UTM tracking link with this Chrome extension to show you how easy it is.
- On your blog post link just click on the extension EffinAmazing and create a Preset for the campaign >> There are only 3 options to fill in which are Campaign, Medium and Source. Make yourself familiar with what those mean on the link I provided above. You can also create a bit.ly shorten url link for adding to your social, email, newsletter campaigns.
Do not forget to add the UTM code that you’ve got and paste it onto the blog post url link so that the post will be tracked in Google Analytics. To check the results go to your Google Analytics account >> Acquisition >> Campaigns >> All Campaigns >> Medium.
In summary, why is it important to track your data and analyse where your visitors are coming from? So that you can improve your visitor’s experience, find out which social networks drive the best traffic, how many visitors come from mobile, which browsers are they using, which keywords are ranked higher.
